50 hours on 2001 base engine with 1995 4bl carb
and electronics never a problem until it just
died after 2 min run.Ran the next day for 2 min
and then died.A little condensation in carb so
swaped out water fule seperator added denature
acohol to tank 1 quart.
There is spark to the plugs and fuelpump pumps
to carb.No water in oil.
Will pull the spark plugs and check condition.
I thing i noticed was never a flooded carb no
excessive fuel smell.
But still wont start even with starting fluid.
Any ideas out there?

Pour a little fuel down the carb and see if she will start. Is the choke plate working? Have someone pump the throttle while looking down the carb throat..Do you see streams of fuel squirting?

Allready been tried no luck. That choke plate?
Both baffels are open but that 95 carb ckoke
wont bolt up to the 2001 intake manifold.
Normaly starts without choke.

Describe "died"...

Died immediately as though you turned off the key? Or died as if running out of fuel...sputter, sputter, cough, cough...kaput.

Just trying to help pin down fuel vs. electrical.

Walt

The Redneck way is to swap a few plug wires around and crank it over. If it backfires and creats a BBQ in the carb, then you have fire and fuel, next check the compression, possible rings are not seating properly since there is only 50 hours on the engine.

Don't do it the Redneck way! It is very dangerous to life and property! Effective, but dangerous!

It is possible you might have an ignition module that is breaking down when it heats up causing you to loose spark.

You must have the main 3 components for it to run: Compression, Fuel, and Fire. Without one, the other two won't work.

There's a post near the top that pertains to a 1985 140 hp MerCruiser...his problem sounds very similar to yours. But I don't know enough about your set up to offer any specific advice. All I can say is the fact that your engine died as though the key was turned off...and the fact it won't run on starting fluid leads me to believe your problem is in the ignition circuit...not the fuel system. However, the fact that you say you have spark at the plugs has me baffled.

Generally speaking...a faulty key switch, or emergency "kill" switch, or bad connection somewhere in the ignition circuit can cause symptoms similar to what you are experiencing. It's simply a case of doing some step by step troubleshooting to locate the problem. It's imparative that you understand the circuit and have the proper tools to diagnose it...

Good luck...and keep us posted. It's interesting to know what you ultimately discover to be the problem.

Walt

Hot-wired from + coil to + battery, started and ran just fine.ING switch checks ok. 3 prong switch.Has to be ing wire because bat and solenoid
got juice to crank the engine. Will trace back to dash, fuse, and wire harness for loss on circuit.
Forgot how easy it is to hotwire a motor, could of been fishing all weekend.
