I've got an intermittent(sometimes pauses 5 - 10 seconds before hearing it) tapping sound coming from the right side of the engine at idle or underway, gets louder underway. someone said it could be the flapper valve. Does that make sense? If not any thoughts on source of noise would be welcome.

Re: gm 3.0 flapper valve?

Your noise is inside your exhaust pipe. It is a "V" flapper with a pin through the center of it. It is designed to stop water from going up into your engine when you have a sudden stop, backing up or a following sea. It also makes noise when you are at idle. A flapper makes noise so learn to live with it.
