Re: Gluten Intoloerance: Real or Marketing Scheme
My fiance has a gluten intolerance. Not ciliacs, but she gets symptoms from gluten that can be quite annoying and painful. She can eat gluten and within a day they return. If she does not eat any, within a couple of days it is mostly gone. Whether some think it is a fad or not, to her it is something she pays close attention too.
My brother, sister and uncle have Crohns. My brother actually was never diagnosed with it, until he was found on the floor unable to move a week or so before college senior year finals. He was rushed to the hospital, brought in for what was thought to be a ruptured apendix. After 4 hours or so, the doctor had to removed a couple feet of both os his intestines. Of course, the doctor was not truly qualified for that type of surgery, and it ended up keeping him in the hospital when it was infected and another surgery needed to be performed. His diet has changed, he spent well over a year dealing with the surgery and its issues, and even to this day continues to get medical treatment. My sister was diagnosed when her symptoms always suggested she had digestion issues, similar to my brothers (my brother kept it quiet though, and just dealt with them himself). She too changed her diet and continues to visit the doctors for remicade and check ups.
Some diseases can be considered a fad, some people are hypocondriacs and will have whatever the latest thing is... other things and other people not so much.
