Hi,
I bought 2 weeks ago a great looking Glastron GT-150 which is a 15' The motor on the boat is actually a Mercury 70HP. If i look on the specification plate in the boat, it says that
it support MAX 90HP. I know a guy that has
a johnson V4 115HP and want to sell it to me
cheap. I was wondering if it can fit on my boat.
Should it be 20" and 25" or only 20" shaft work?
I'm asking cause i'm new in boating..
Thanks for the reply

Only go with the power rating on the boat plate. Over powering a boat is against the law and insurance is null and void if you do that.

The United States Coast Guard has an opinion on this frequently asked question, and their answer from their website is reproduced below:
Can I use a bigger motor on my boat than what it's rated for?
It is not a violation of Coast Guard regulations to install or use an engine larger than specified on the capacity label, but there may be state regulations prohibiting it, and restrictions from your own insurance company regarding this.
There are no Coast Guard regulations against exceeding the safe loading capacity, however, there may be State regulations or restrictions from your insurance company which prohibit this. There is a Coast Guard regulation that gives Coast Guard Boarding Officers the power to terminate the use of a boat (send it back to shore) if, in the judgment of the Boarding Officer, the boat is overloaded. There is no fine for this, unless the operator refuses the Boarding Officer's order. We certainly hope that you will abide by the rating, as overloading may lead to capsizing or swamping of the boat.
NOTE: The Coast Guard Capacity Information label is required only on monohull boats less than 20' in length. The label is not required on multi-hull boats, pontoon boats (catamarans), or on any sailboats, canoes, kayaks, or inflatable boats, regardless of length.
As the Coast Guard mentions, local regulations may apply. For example, in the state of Ohio one should be guided by this regulation:
Capacity Plates
(ORC 1547.39 & ORC 1547-40)
No person shall operate or permit operation of a watercraft in excess of any of the stated limits on the capacity plate. When no capacity plate exists, no person shall operate or permit operation of a watercraft if a reasonably prudent person would believe the total load aboard or the total horsepower of any motor or engine presents a risk of physical harm to persons or property.

The reality is,a 90 and 115 johnson are same block, bore, stroke ,just a bit of carb tweaking.BUT,you could get into a bit of a hassle if you have an accident ,or if the coast guard does an inspection. One thing you might want to do is find a 90 hp hood and remove the IDtag and the disk on the block that identifies the eng as a 115.It would be against the law.I dont want to TELL you to do it.But I have done alot of engine rebuilding and can tell you that many old engines have long lost their ID due to corrosion, abuse, theft, rebuilding processes etc.So an old boat with an old motor can change hands many many times with the new owner not sure of the history. You say your new to boats. There lies a problem. That boat and motor set up is a rocketship on water. At wide open throttle it WILL become squirley to the point its borderline out of control.People die every yr.from such set ups.I've driven those boats with 90 yamaha's and scared myself a few times.Whatever power you put on.PLEASE spend a few bucks on installing a safety halyard ,so if you get thrown out, the eng.will shut off.High speed turns are dangerous.I know or knew a guy with a similiar rocket ,big merc with a chopper prop. The prop chopped his chest after being thrown and boat circled til it got him. He's dead. Was 17 yrs old.A great mechanic that didnt do the mechanical part that would have saved his life.I would love to find a nice gt-150.I'll take the 115 too.Perhaps you might want to sell it.
