Glastron Carlson CVX 16 Stringer Question

Hello all.

I'm in the process of restoring a '79 Glastron Carlson CVX 16 Deluxe and was wondering if anyone out there had pictures (or knows the layout) of a CVX under restoration that would show the layout/location of the stringers.

The boat is 95% solid - there was only one very small soft spot (4") in the floor that was under the rear bench seat - everything else was rock solid (even the transom). When I got the boat, it did have some water in it so, now I'm questioning if I need to pull the entire floor. I'd hate to go to that extent only to find the stringers in good shape. I'd prefer to cut a 'peep' hole in the floor to poke around but don't know exactly the best place to cut.

Thanks, in advance, for any insight.

Re: Glastron Carlson CVX 16 Stringer Question

Hi, you might want to go visit the forums over at ClassicGlastron. The guys over there have a ton of knowledge. kert0307 is restoring a 78 CVX16. http://www.classicglastron.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=1646&hilit=cvx16

I just noticed that you have the outboard version, while he has the I/O model. Still, the stringer layout was similar from the bow to the area under the seating area though.

Re: Glastron Carlson CVX 16 Stringer Question

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but thats the exact condition mine appeared to be in. 1979 cvx 16. The fact is that these things were not made that well at the factory. if water has ever entered your inner hull cavity (and it has) everything will be wet and starting to rot. They will appear sound even when they are water logged. There is only one keel stringer in the boat. It and the floor make up the structural integrity of the hull. i did a complete deck off, hull down to the skin rebuild new stringer transon additional sub stringers/knee boards fuel decks new floor and seat construction upholstery yada yada yada. my advice... If your up to a big project, good with your hands and tools, have a decent work shop, a wife or girlfriend that really loves you enough to go through smelling 10 gallons (yes 10) of resin cure. and you have about 8-12 months and 8-12 grand to spend....go for it. Otherwise....go buy a new Minx.
