My wife and I are taking a trip to Glacier Bay, AK this August and we are planning to rent a double kayak for 5 days to do the West Arm. Has anybody done this or something similar so they can give us some tips? The only kayaking we have done so far was in Marlbourough Sound in New Zealand so it will be a little different, but the website acts like pretty much anyone in decent shape can do it. Honestly, both of us are more worried about the bears than the kayaking...

Re: Glacier Bay, AK

We vacationed in AK last summer, took a Kenai Fiords Glaicer tour out of Seward on a large boat but there are lot of kayak tours around. If you enjoy kayaking I would say go for it. The local people will steer you clear of trouble. Yes, we saw plenty of big bears and every thing else Whales-Moose-Puffins- Seals-it was an excellent trip and the people there are glad to share thier wonderful state with visitors.
Best vacatoin I have ever had. We stayed in the Homer-Anchor Point area--And really good fishing too.

Re: Glacier Bay, AK

We just reserved one of the 18 foot double kayaks with Glacier Bay Sea Kayaks for a five day kayak/camp/fish/hike up the West Arm and I'm starting to assemble all the gear we'll need for the trip.

We're not doing the tour group thing, headed out on our own and we're pretty excited about it. Just a little concerned about the logistics of packing everything we need and getting it there from Dallas. We're planning to spend a few days before that in Ninilchik to get in some salmon or halibut fishing too. It's our first trip to Alaska and from what we've heard we're pretty sure it's going to be the first in a series.
