There is no such thing as a "Gimbal" on your boat.
There is a gimbal bearing, a gimbal ring, and a gimbal housing.
Which are you referring to?

sorry for the lack of info mates.......78 glastron 350... 260 hp mercruiser, it needs the gimbal ring replaced and probably a few more parts as well I would think, lots of play side to side........

Do some reading first, there might be a repair for the top & bottom pivots, or the steering arm and it's linkage could be involved too.

from the sounds of it, you should bring it to a dealer. a gimbal ring is not something you should try and replace if you need to ask about engine removal prior to teardown/install. hope that didn't come across as rude, wasn't meant that way.

no worries......I have had a couple of different opinions about how this is done and wanted to ask people who are more familiar with boats in general as I'm presently in a northern region working with not alot of resources.........thanks all

Re: gimble replacement Alpha1 Gen 1

There is a method where drill access holes in the side of the gimbal housing to access the nut on the upper pivot shaft. Instructions start on page 4B-10 of the OEM manual. I don't recommend this method, but it is described in the manual, and the other method requires pulling the engine and gimbal housing out of the boat.
Here is a link to the manual, go to section 4B.

I think you will find it is going to be MUCH easier to simply find another good used transom assembly. The time, effort, and money taken to repair whatever is worn out is just not worth it when compared to bolting on one that is not worn out. That's been my experience anyway.

Re: gimble replacement Alpha1 Gen 1

The "drilling holes" method is fine.........I did it prior to this season on my 1991 5.7 Alpha ("Gen I") to replace the Upper Swivel Shaft and its seal.
I had no easy way to remove the engine. I was able to replace the upper & lower bushings for the Upper Swivel Shaft, as well...........difficult, but I highly recommend doing that (although you may have greased bearings and maybe you don't need to, then).
I also replace my Lower Swivel Pin and its bushin, and I even used Resiweld (then sold remaining Resiweld on eBay).
You can then replace any/all other bolts/nuts/bellows/shift cable, etc.........give your whole transom assembly a re-build.
USE THE JR MARINE STAINLESS STEEL UPPER SWIVEL SHAFT...........they're awesome!
