1984 Mercruiser 305/Alpha (R)
As I read and read and read, I have come across a few comments regarding the use of cork gaskets for gimble installation! Both the large rubber gasket and the Y pipe gasket (fig 1) are available in cork and rubber O ring style. My replacement Y pipe will be a salvage fresh water Y pipe in serviceable shape.
Options requested here, "which would you use to reinstall the gimble and would you use an adhesive?"
There is another issue I have regarding the hyd. manifold at the bottom of the gimble (Fig 2). There is a small factory hole in the center of the manifold that looks like nothing more than a debris hole. I see no function for this hole. The gasket below the manifold has a matching hole in it but this hole doesn't look factor made, more like abrasion due to sand/crap entering this area. Found lots of debris inside this area were all the hyd. lines join. Is this normal for this vintage Alpha?
