i'm wonderin if i just put the cart before the horse.

i need to do a gimble brg on my 1 drive. i ain't got nothing to pull it or drive it with, yet. i see the proper tools uses the bell hoseing as a support for plates so i can use screwthreads to pull it out. my bell houseing is off all ready. thinkin i was smart so i wouldn't need to have me some long snap ring pliers.....anyways. can i get it out w/o the bell houseing attached or am i forced into doin my rubber puttin it back together again up to the bell houseing part, then goin for my gimble brg with a proper plate and screwthead puller press....

also wondering about the gimble brg. driver that merstuff has. the one that ya afix to yer alignment bar.... "http://www.mercstuff.com/gimbalbearingdriver.htm" any one use that and think it's a good idea over gettin a proper driver....... it's cheaper than the real driver....

No reason in the world to pull the gimbal ring.......... Man , that would be a waste of time.
Just use a slide hammer on the gimbal bearing, or wait till you put the bellhousing back on.

i hadn't planed on doing that. however since were on the subject......:) got a question about that too. the port hinge pin i was able to extract with my fingers.....:( it wasn't real hopless feeling. but still. with my fingers? starboard side i had to use a slide hammer, but it came out pretty easy..... is this an issue? seems like it might be to me....gonna go inspect them later to see how much wear there is.....gotta clean em off first, filthy greasy things.......:)

can i reuse my small nails? nla......they didn't get broke off. but do have some small dike marks in them from removal....

Just use a slide hammer on the gimbal bearing
cool, that's what i was hopeing.......now to find one.......

now to find one.......

Ayuh,.....

1 can be made with a length of threaded rod, a few washers,+ an old sledgehammer head........

Do you have the engine in the boat? I was fortunate enough that I had taken my engine out when I spotted the bad gimbal bearing, a length of 2x2 placed on the gimbal bearing from the engine side and a hammer where all I needed to remove the bearing. They are tight to get out, if the engine is still in the boat then the slide hammer trick would be your best bet. Do be carefull to correctly align the new bearing with the grease line when installing the new bearing.

Re: gimble brg. removal

well, a bad day in general today. don't usually have them, but today???

anyways, guess now i'm gettin the blues over the proper replacement for my gimble brg. mercstuff is confuseing me, maybe.

1, i got a snap ring
2, i got the cutouts faceing me from the rear of the boat
3, i decided that since the cutouts were facein me to try to spin the brg out. that worked, the brg. itself is out. the adaptor carrier is still in the gimble housing.
4, my brg measures the 2.834'', it's a $40 brg from mercstuff. my brg. is marked made in usa, link-belt
5, went to the merc dealer, locally. they think i have to old style brg. i guess its bigger in dia. it has a plastic piece that i guess is to be removed. i don't see plastic. my carrier i'm sure is metal......they went and pulled the only brg. they had on hand and said it's the wrong one, i need the other one. it's $160. brg. only i guess. they also said that if the carrier was plastic i needed the 160 job. alum. and i need the one they have. but it comes with a carrier. cant remember, maybe $70. i only want the brg. is that right? can i leave the carrier i got in place? at this point i think my options are get the $70 one locally, or order the mercstuff one for 40....if it weren't for my dealer, i say the mercstuff one that's 2.834" must be right. as mine is too......

want some pics to see what i have? it surely has been one of themz dayz............

oh, if i need to remove the carrier and all, guess i found a puller. and something that may work for snapring pliers....maybe......

thrasher, my engine aint out..........yet.........seems boats can lead ya that way pretty fast. i'm crossin my fingers to not have to do that......but got a a frame in the back yard and a chain hoist if it comes to that i guess.....what i'm doing should'nt lead me there i dont think though....i hope,,,,,,,,,,
