I have a 2002 3.0 Litre Volvo Penta with an SX drive. Found that the bellow boot was torn and my gimball bearing rusted beyond repair. After I replaced both parts, the new bearing ripped to shreds on the first trip out. Anyone have any tips or ideas so I don't tear up another?

You mean the boot ripped again, right? You might have something making contact with it on/from the shaft on the inside.......

The boot did not rip this time. The bearing literally just fell apart to many pieces. I had to be towed in. Is it possible to install it backwards? What is the proper procedure to install it?

The cutouts were forward. The driver I used to insert it was a 1 1/2 inch pvc pipe. I installed it to the housing first then inserted the shaft/stern. I had a little difficulty but with the help of an engine lift, it went in. It was a bit tight to torque the six bolts in too.

I dont think you could hit PVC hard enough to fully seat the bearing. did you grease the bearing after the instaall and insure visually that the grease hole in the bearing carrier was alined with the grease hole in the bearing bore?
and did you use the alignment tool to center the bearing with the coupler after the bearing install ?

No and no. I did not realize until I removed it again that there was a grease hole to be lined up with an external fitting. And I did not use an alignment tool because I figured if I did not loosen the engine, it should not be out of alignment.

that could be your failure.
also make sure your driver ONLY contacts the aluminium carrier and not the bearing or bearing shield. the bearing will swivel in the carrier and needs to be centered after the install. only good way to center it is with the alignment tool. you will here backyard stoies of old shafts and such but they are not very accurate. if they were thats what we would all use. its all fun but its all in the service manual as well.
reading is cheaper than re replacing :)

Thanks for the input. I will look into getting the alignment tool needed. As for a manual, I have been looking for one but can't seem to find it. I have a 2002 SX drive and the manuals only go to 2000. I am not sure if it will have the information I need.

You need Volvo service manual #7743008.
