So I picked up my transom assembly today. It's not perfect, but a whole lot better than mine was even before the crash, and a lot cheaper than some of the ones I found were. But it has the same kind of slop in between the steering arm and the gimbal ring that my old one had.
I looked at mercstuff.com, but their info is about a newer kind of steering arm pivot that mine has. I cleaned out a bunch of grease and looked at it closely, and the arm is firmly attached to the pivot shaft, so the slop must be in the gimbal ring. But the merc book shows that gimbal ring as splined, so I guess there's no fix short of a brand new gimbal ring?
It's not awful but if it can be reasonably repaired while I've got it all torn apart, I'd like to do that. Otherwise, I will just live with it. Other gimbal rings I've looked at had similar slop.
