good morning,

i have a repowered 3.0L Volvo Penta with an SX outdrive. The out drive is a 1998 and original. I have about 150 hrs on the new motor (model MWTR) and everything was working great until last weekend. I started getting some clatter in what I thought was my bell housing and it kept getting progressively worse as the day went on. I thought my coupler and fly wheel were coming loose so I pulled the motor and everything seems tight. I did notice that the spindle that mates with the engine coupled had some play in it (about an eighth of an inch in any direction). Is this normal? I cannot seem to find any specs on it. Any thoughts about this would be appreciated and also if you think this could transfer noise to the bell housing would be appreciated as well.

I aligned the engine when I repowered the boat about three years ago and I have not had the engine out until this weekend. I have not pulled the out drive yet but that was my next step (since I would of had to realign from pulling the motor). Could it be the u-joints?

Ayuh,..... Pullin' the drive is the 1st step in pullin' the motor, not the last step,......

I have a full six inches of clearance from the front of the engine bulkhead to disengage the coupler when pulling the motor. I followed my manuals instructions (not to say they haven’t been wrong before). So what damage could this have caused?

you are not following the factory manual.

pull drive, then pull motor. more work the other way as well.

so...... pull the drive and look at the u-joint. you are supposed to be pulling the drive every year anyway for the annual u-joint and gimbal inspection.
