I have a 1987 Volvo AQ225 (GM 305 ci) mated to a AQ275 outdrive. I think the gimbal bearings in the upper drive unit need to be replaced (growling sound is noticable). Do I need to pull the engine to replace them or can I get to them by just removing the upper drive?

To replace the intermediate shaft bearings you have to pull the engine. If you need to replace just the u-joints, you can removed just the upper part of the drive.

Sad but true. The alignment bearing on this unit will need the engine pulled to replace, however these are sealed bearings ,on the inside of your boat.Even if you have a bellow failure this bearing is still OK provided the shaft seal is alright.Keep in mind that this bearing can be lubed from the inside of the boat and if that has not happened in a while , might be the source of your noise.I hope so.

Re: Gimbal Bearing replacement

I figured there wouldn't be an easy way to replace the bearings. I'm going to try Hondon's advice and grease them from the fitting on the bellhousing. I bought this boat used, so I don't know when the last time they were greased.<br />Thanks for your help.
