Gift Exchange - Tacky or not??

Here's the deal. My wifes family has a gift exchange where we swap names and then we buy a gift for that person. The stated gift limit is $50.

This year my wife had her brother in law. His wife had my wife (they are sisters). She bought him a heart rate monitor for working out and because the amount came in under $50 she went and bought him some socks to make up the value.

My SIL purchased a skirt for my wife and left the tags on it that showed a sale price of $49.99. She also attached a gift receipt. Well the skirt wasn't quite right and she went to the same store and found a pair of pants for about $50. When they rang her up, the lady wanted another $25. As it turns out, the SIL bought the skirt for $24.99 and passed it off for $50.

This is not the first time she has done this.

We don't need the money or the value is not that important to us, but we just think it is really cheap and tacky. BTW, her husband is a dentist. Need I say more..

What do you think??

Exchanging a gift is not tacky, especially an article of clothing, due to size etc.

Passing off a gift as worth more than it was, is REALLY tacky.

Wealth does NOT determine class.

I'm not sure that would apply. THe store should credit the amount PAID, not the mark down price.

Hey, if you say to her "skirt wasnt quite right so we took it back-but I think the store's put it on sale and will only give us $25 back for it. Can we ask you to go in with your credit card reciept and sort it out please?!'

She'd think twice about doing it again.

My wife tells me, with taste like your, always leave the reciept in the bag.
But passing off a $25 gift for a $50 one, if it was me, I would tell her. Not at all honest.
Cheers
Phillip

LOL roger! My Wifes family had a tradition of presenting a "shopping list" of items that they wished to be given by the person whos name was drawn from a hat.

I thought this practice BS, told my wife so and stated that we (I) give gifts based on what I wish to present to the person.

Actually werked out well, and is now received as fine by my wifes family. We do have a gift receipt in the present just in case an exchange is desired.

Go figure.

Jehosaphat!!

What has gift giving and receiving turned into??

I hear so much about returning and even selling "unwanted" gifts. I can see exchanging clothing for a more correct size, but if you don't "want" it, give it back. Maybe the giver has a more grateful recipient to give it to.

Now, as to faking what a gift cost and/or the store bogusing the real price . . . .PERGAKLOSICPEP!!!

Ohhh, I can hear my Grandma's comment on modern manners. She would have used a stronger term than "tacky".

It is tacky IMHO however, maybe the giver found a really good deal and thought it was the perfect for the recipient, in which case maybe she should have bought more to add up to the $50. On the other hand, if the gift exchange has a top limit of $50 then anything less could be acceptable, 'cept for maybe a "regift" OMG.

LMAO :D
