Get new out drive vs having the dealer try to fix mine

I am about to use my lower unit as therapy for my frustrations, after miss reading inches/lbs as foot/lbs, I sheared one bolt and another one feel off, when I tried to remove it. I tried to drill them out, though I think I just made it worst. To maintain my sanity I am thinking about ordered a new lower unit or taking this one to the dealer. Any idea how much someone or some place would charge to bore out and retap two holes for the impeller housing?

I just realized why people have broken cars, jetskis, and boats in their garage or driveway. They get married and have kids. I just don't have the time to chase the toddler, do stuff the wife asks, and try to fix everything that breaks around the house. So I am going to have to turn in my man card.

Also I have learned to not be overzealous about maintenance. My neighbor wondered why the boat he had for over 20 years was overheating, I asked him had he ever switched the impeller, he asked what that was. Maybe after 5 years mine would have lasted another 5. Well at least I reinforced my initial concerns with over torquing. It can't be 60ft/lbs, that is a lot for something that small of a bolt, my friend read it the same wrong way too :(

In all after this and only being out in it once and with all the other little things that this boat has problems with, I think I will fix it up, take it out for one last run, then have the 2nd best day of a boaters life, the selling of the boat. It has been a lot of fun and I don't regret buying one. Unless the wife really protests, I am calling it quits. Maybe in a few years we can get back into it. Short season, cost of storage, maintenance, and lack of time is showing its sign.

You're probably looking at around $50 if you take it to a machine shop. Fwiw, toddlers suck. This summer has been a blast with a 4 and 6 year old. They actually play by themselves and let me do my own thing occasionally.

take it to a machine shop

This is the ticket, a machine shop will know how to do it. If you take it to a dealer they will probably take it to a machine shop. Look up a local engine rebuilder

I wouldn't throw it n the towel, as above my kids and their friends have a great time on the boat, making life long friends and memories. Was tough when they were toddlers but that doesn't last long.

The guys are right on find a Machine shop, engine rebuilder, welding outfit, or auto repair shop where the owner builds hot rods, the grimmer looking the better (cheaper). Anyone who can install a helicoil can do it. We've all broken stuff or gotten in over our heads, that's how you learn. I will never forget the look on my dads face when (I was 18) when he comes home and sees the transmission from my gto apart on the workbench "I didn't realize you were going to get into that ..."

I broke a water pocket bolt off in an Alpha 1. Was able to set a nut on top of it and weld down through the hole in the nut attaching it to the broken off stub. The trick works because heating the broken and frozen stub expands it and when it cools it is loosened. Drag the lower to a machine shop, they all have tricks they can use.
