Just wondering if there would be a large quality difference or reliability issues between a Genuine Mercruiser engine coupler for a bravo III drive and the after market Sierra engine coupler for the bravo III drive powered by a 5.7L LX mercruiser, Since there is almost a $200.00 difference in price!

Howdy,

If I was replacing my coupler, I would buy the Sierra.

I buy Sierra all the time and never had an issue with the parts I get. Hands up for Sierra

Re: Genuine Mercruiser vs. Sierria replacement parts

I for one like Sierra. I have had both Sierra and Quicksilver transom service kits, and the Sierra kit had MUCH better clamps, heavier hose, what looked to me like a better gasket, and a heavier u-joint bellow. They also sell greasable gimbal bearings for half the cost of the sealed Mercruiser part. On top of that, it seems like genuine Mercruiser parts are such a PITA to get. The closest marina to me is a 1 hr. drive, so I usually order parts online, and while I can usually find the part I want, it's often hard to get all the parts I need in one order, and then it takes a week to get. Napa can have it tomorrow, iBoats can have it to me in 2-3 days, and I don't have to leave my house

Now, I'm not a professional mechanic, just a DIY guy, so take this with a grain of salt.

I've installed lots of seirra parts over the years. Also lots of quicksilver parts. I still vote quicksilver, seem to hold up better for me. Why would I want to do it twice just to save a few bucks once. It cost more to replace the second time...been there done that. No more!
But everyone has an opinion. Thats just me.

Re: Genuine Mercruiser vs. Sierria replacement parts

Been laid up or would have replied sooner. Thanks for the advise on the Mercruiser vs. Sierra parts!!

Next question is: Since the engine is out of the boat.

Would you change or is there a need to change the engine coupler when you repower with the same horsepower engine as the original engine? My current engine coupler has given me no problems and the engine and outdrive ran strong before the major engine failure. I don't want to throw another $300.00 to $500.00 at the boat if there is really no need to but will do so if it is best to do so.

If your engine coupler is in good condition ("splines" "Rubber" etc.), been serviced regularly, the engine alignment has been set correctly for the majority of its life, then by all means, I personally would re-use the old coupler without hesitation.

Good luck.:)
