Hello once again. My boat is a Bayliner 27' Ceria. It has heat/air, hot water/shower. Satellite TV, all the comforts of home. I would like to add a generator. Oh, its a single engine 260. I think I have room for one and I have a friend who can hook it up, My question is, what is a good generator? and what about should the cost be? This is new territory for me, all help/opinions will be appreciated.

Dave

Re: Generators

Have you considered a Honda EU2000i? Great portable, less than a thousand bucks for 2 kW, and very very quiet. It seems to be the most popular portable genny for boating or RVing.

This is enough power to run your hot water tank (1500 W) or any other loads less than that, like battery chargers or microwave.

Plus you can use it at home in a power failure!

Dave,

A couple things to consider.

1. If you are going for a permanent mount with cooling water and exhaust hook ups, make sure it is done correctly.

2. BE CAREFUL WITH PORTABLES. THEY MUST BE OPERATED OUTSIDE THE BOAT. Boats are great big tubs just waiting to fill up with deadly carbon monoxide (CO) gas.

EITHER WAY, A CO detector is a MANDATORY addition.

If you are going the #1 route, ther are many good names out there. Onan, Northern Lights, Westerbeke, to name a few.

Re: Generators

If a permanete install is what you want to do I would recommend no less than 5000KW and would recommend using a 7500KW with all that you listed. I personally like the Kohler 7500KW it uses a 16HP kawasaki engine. They also have a sound shield avaliable. To buy a new unit and install it properly it wont be cheap. I would be guessing but if you bought everything new I wouldnt be a bit suprised to see a $7000.00 bill getting broken all to he!! wiring, outlets, breakers, breaker panel, muffler, hoses, CO detectors, battery cables, thru hulls, strainer, fuel hose, fuel fittings, fuel pick-up tube, and all the other stuff I forgot to mention. Whatever you spend on the generator you will probably spend on installation accessories.

Re: Generators

Reel Poor has the right list of goodies to be safe and correct. It is not a cheap job to put one into a boat that never had one.
