General Sport Jet info needed

I recently purchased a small center console with a 97 Mercury Sportjet 120xr motor. I know basically nothing about this motor other than do not run it out of the water. It already has a flush kit installed on motor. The previous owner said that the last time he ran the boat it overheated on him and he suspected that the intake water hose was clogged due to it being busted. The motor is not seized. Ive found a used water inlet hose on ebay and am waiting for it to arrive. What else do I need to check or replace to get this boat back on the water? Any info would be greatly appeciated. Thanks! -Jason

What kind of info do you need , I could type all night and not even cover 5% of the boat . I will tell you this the permanent type flushing adapter is only for flushing the motor with clean water , you will blow the ride plate or engine if you try to run it out of the water only on it !

I guess what kind of info Im looking for is what extra care steps i need to take to for proper care of this motor. Is there anything extra I need to do above what i would normaly do for an outboard? Also would there be anything off hand I would need to replace first before trouble shooting the overheating issue. Right now I'm replacing the busted water inlet hose and going to install a new thermostat as well.

You need to isolate the problem , could be the throttle control , shift or throttle cables or the gate itself . I would start by disconnecting the gate cable at the gate , then try the throttle , check that the gate moves up and down with little or no resistance. it it checks out and the throttle is still stiff , disconnect the throttle linkage at the engine , be sure the timing tower moves freely . if this all checks out then it is time to pull the throttle control out . disconnect cables and see if it is a cable or the control that is sticking.

i took the pin out of the linkage on the gate and the gate is not the problem...it'll be a couple weeks before i get in to take a look at the cable and control...

ok.. ive got the control box sprayed down with wd40..so it looks like the problem is the cable itself.. how hard is one of these to switch out?

well... got the old cables out and they appeared to be damaged in a couple places and were seized up a bit...got new cables ordered...at least the 30 series are much cheaper than the 40 series...

Good thing you needed the 30 series , the 40 series is discontinued and a parts hunt would have ensued !! Post up and let us know if this is the fix you needed !

Re: General Sport Jet info needed

sorry for the delay...thses were indeed the right parts...now im just having a hard time getting the motor to run properly...it sounds great but something aint right...ive had the carbs cleaned and synched...but still i am unable to get on plane..speedwise...gps says 12 mph..and im kickin up one heck of a wake and rooster tail...the mechanic that cleaned the carbs said i might need new reed valves or something...this is getting frustrating...this motor is the only thing keeping the boat water ready....he tested the compression and said they were within acceptable tolerances but didnt give me the values...
