It seems that I can remember when pleasure boats such as fishing boats on inland waterways, didn't have to be registered. Does anyone remember when this began, or was it different for each state?

Re: General Question

it's a state thing. There's still some boats here that are exempt from registration. Chief ;)

Re: General Question

state by state. My state only began requiring it a few years ago. Some states use coast guard registration.

Re: General Question

California boats needed registration back in 1967 when I bought my first boat with a few exceptions.<br />Row boats and dingy/tenders with less than 5 hp.

Re: General Question

The states looked at this and said, "Hey, we can generate some revenue here." The rest, as they say, is history.
