I recently inherited an old Johnson 6hp motor. The model number is CD-23B and the serial number is J2609300
Does anybody know what year this motor is?
What ratio premix should be used?
There is a knob on the front of the engine labled "lean rich" Do you just adjust this until it runs smooth? Can the motor be leaned out with this knob enough to harm the engine?
Thanks

CD-23 is a 1966 2 cylinder engine.
It displaces 8.84 cubic inches, and makes it's 6hp at 4500 RPMs.
The spark plug was orignially a Champion J6J, now a J6C.
The fuel/oil ratio is 50:1

To adjust the idle mixture screw, first warm the engine. At idle, turn the screw clockwise in 1/8th turns and let sit for a few seconds. When the engine begins to misfire/sneeze, turn the screw counter-clockwise until the highest rpms are reached.

Thanks for the information Paul. It amazes me that the thing still runs. It doesn't look like anybody has ever had the cowl off.

Re: general info on old Johnson 6hp

Same old Motor? I have used it every winter for 8-10 years to crappie fish. I have never had to do a thing to it except plugs and a little seafoam every 2 years. This time it finally started and then just died. I think it's flooding itself out. Seems the carb is puking out fuel when it's dying. It'll only run for a few seconds then floods terribly. I have never had a problem like this. Anyone have a clue what it could be? Carb looks like a bear to remove. One bolt is behind the pull starter. I know its sucked a little sea foam in. Im wondering if it's the float sticking.? It usually takes a few minutes on choke too. (when cold out) it is starting without choke also. For some reason its getting way too much gas..
Any help would be appreciated. We usually fish on Christmas...

you will have much better luck starting a new thread as opposed to hijacking a 10 year old thread.

I might not call it "hijacking". Didn't intend that. Sometimes people with like motors will notice a post about a motor they may have fixed a few times. Sorry.

Most forums get raw if you come in and post without wading through a few years of threads that are a little similar but not completely..

Just had a question. Most forums gave "active" topics and "today's" topics. Etc.

sorry gls...didnt mean to come off as being rude, but "reviving" a ten year old thread can get confusing in some cases. its truely best to start a new thread, with your make/model and year and your own particular question (s). ( have a read of the forum rules.)

Re: general info on old Johnson 6hp

Giot jumped on from BOTH ends. 1. For posting on old Thread. (which became relevant the second I hit reply)
2. Wasn't supposed to post as soon as account was opened.

Paranoia will destroy ya. All I wanted was a second opinion on the fact that I probably have a float sticking. And. How can I get carb off without taking manual start system off?? Says to basically leave it alone in my manual.. I tried to send pics. I didn't have any luck.

If someone would like to help a guy out please email me. I can send picsor photobucket links to pics that way. Just after the manual saying what it did and one stud/nut is BEHIND the pull starter I was hoping for someone with experience helping an old hillbilly see something he was certainly missing.

maybe then everyone will be happy with the way I tried to get a little information. I will not post again if someone will give me a touch of their wisdom.

Thanks to all!

Merry Christmas all!

Re: general info on old Johnson 6hp

You don't have to completely take off the starter to get the carb off. Take the two starter mounting bolts loose and carefully push the starter aside to get the carb mounting bolts off.
You'll want an OEM carb kit that has a new float (383052).
Also replace the fuel lines while you're at it.
A Sierra 18-7350 fuel pump works on those motors.

Re: general info on old Johnson 6hp

Thank you kindly Mr. Whaler. The information you provided me with will be a great help.

I took some BS just to get someone with the knowledge I needed... BUT.. Even though some thought I went about it wrong, as usual, someone with the answers came through.

Thanks again!
