gen II controls...confused

hello all, I have a question. I am putting an 85 xr2 mercury on my 95 hydrasport. I am having to install mercury controls as it had Evinrude controls. It had a panel mounted control on it and I have to stick with that. The boat has an angle not allowing an all in one style box to be mounted without making a standoff or something to mount it flush against. All of the panel mounted shifters I see are "gen II" which I have read have different ends than the "gen I" cables like I have. I have read teleflex makes a cable with the correct ends on it.The guy at one of the local dealers said a regular gen II cable will work fine. This guy also thinks he knows everything so I hate even talking to him. Am I correct in saying that I need to find a Gen II style shifter with the custom cables for my application? I say gen II because I have not found a "new" panel mount shifter that has the old style cable ends..do they make them? Thanks so much for any insight.

appreciate the links and response. I guess I need to word it better. The boat changes angle right where the box would need to be mounted. In other words the bottom of the box would be flush but the top would have to have washers or something behind the screws. In order to get the box to mount flush I would have to mount it below the angle and then the top of the shifter would be way down low. The original shifter has the hole cut out right where the angle starts so that it sets at the proper height. Im pretty sure Im gonna have to stay with the panel mount style control. Its not as hard on my wallet as I can reuse the original ignition harness out of my old shifter box. That will save me from having to buy a control box and a new ignition harness.

I see so they shimmed the shifter with washers so that its flush mounted rather than tilted. Does that make the shifter unstable? If so You could use a peice of thick aluminumstock and drill out the holes for the shifter to be attached and give it more stability

thanks for that link. I guess the only thing really holding me back is finding the information regarding the cables with the gen II on the box end and the old style on the motor end. As the literature points out, they are totally different. The way it reads it would seem that you could not merge the old style with the new, but I swear i read somewhere they did make them.
