I need to do some gel coat repair and have been reading through various posts/articles. One thing that is mentioned is that if there is a deep gouge, a filler is needed first. From the pics I've added, are these considered deep gouges? They look/feel like they just start to touch the surface of the underlying fiberglass.

Also, since they are on the side of the hull, I realize I need gel coat paste. I'm assuming that you add the coloring to the paste but what is the best way to mix it in? Recommendations for gel coat paste?

To me a deep gouge is punching through the FG completely. If you have some FG woven roving left....that didn't allow the gouge to go all the way through, then paste gel coat should do the trick. Back in 1972 I bought a new Caravelle tri-hull and knocked a chip out of the hull on rocks. I contacted Caravelle and they sent me an exact matching gel coat repair kit. Cleaned the spot, took a putty knife and carefully packed the hole. Let it dry good and that was that. Couldn't tell it unless you were examining it at close range.
