Gel coat / fiberglass question?

I'm currently looking at buying another boat right now and have my eyes on a 1991 Baja 260 sport 26'. This boat is in great shape but it has a few nicks in the gel coat below the water line. One chip is all the way thru the gel coat and is about the size of a dime. Do you think this can penetrate water? Its looks like the area has lots of fiberglass. Water would not go thru the glass would it?

By the way I think the boat is stored out of the water most of the time.

You can get gel coat patch kits at most boat supply shops. They come with various tints to allow you to match the existing color. Make sure you clean the area well and follow the instructions on the kit and you should be fine.

I'm asking if this type of damage would cause water to leak into the boat. I have made gel coat repairs to other boats before, so fixing it is not a problem.

It depends on how well the fiberglass cloth was saturated with resin during manufacture. Generally I would say no - many fuel tanks are made out of fiberglass and they should not leak.

I,ve been doing repair work for 28 years now Yes water does penatrate glass but over years. save your money for now and wait till you have a few, cost is about the same. Unless you can't stand the sight of them.Over1 year you are going to nick the bottom. As long as the repair man is matching gel [1 to 10 dime size areas] there is not a big price difference.
