Gears grinding after re- install drive

[No more boats]

2000 ox 66
2 stroke
250 hp

pulled drive too change impeller
top seals , bottom seals
shift seal
gear oil change ( water intrusion )
throttle in N
did not move shifter while changing seal , shifter not easy too move without vice grips
Installed drive
gears grinding ,
forward slight grind
R - louder grind
Into N fine
dropped drive 1/2 dz times ,,
drive was supported by tie down straps so I was able too adjust shifter ever so slightly making sure shifter and hoses lined up
Prior too work no grinding forward or reverse
obviously I am off a spline but cant seem too adjust properly
working solo
this weekend my son will be here , should one of us moving throttle slightly while other installs drive ?

Not that it will help you, but I did find my brothers C60 had a twisted shift shaft and a bent thru pin in the output shaft some years ago apparently from someone trying to shift it while the motor/shafts were not turning to help the dogs line up

if the shifter and motor are in the neutral position and it still makes nosie, then something is bent or twisted is my thought

someone tried to jack with the adjustments to make it better, but when I adjusted to spec it was a major problem
