Gearoil Change Question

I have a 1983 15 hp Johnson short shaft pull start. I bought new screw gaskets for changing the gear oil. I notice when removing the top vent screw there was no gasket on it. I changed the gear oil, and installed a new gasket on the lower fill screw and the upper vent screw. The lower screw looks fine but the top screw sticks out and is not flush (maybe a mm or two). It is in there tight. Is there supposed to be a gasket on the upper vent screw or a reason it was left off? I noticed the top gasket is included in evinrude's gearcase diagram.

Thanks

Yes, they both should have gaskets. Also, I noticed mine sticks out a little too. It doesn't matter.

Yes, there must be a gasket on both the fill and vent screws. Look closely at the top...likely there is a gasket on the screw...it's just stuck and maybe still has the original factory paint. By putting another one on, the screw now sticks out.

Re: Gearoil Change Question

 there was a gasket underneath. Why didn't I think of that?

Double gasketting.... that has gotten me in trouble changing the oil filter on my car before.... what a mess

Almost time to do the decarbing and first fishing run. Thanks Mas. Happy boating everybody!
