Gearcase maintenance

I am needing advice about the gear case oil and changing it in the lower end of a Johnson Sea Horse AD-11. I have seen several examples of this being done. But I don't really know which is the correct procedure. I have seen the oil being filled from the top and also from the bottom using a pump to pump the oil into the gear case. I just got the motor and the previous owner said that he had used it down in Florida in the salt water, so I want to change out the oil before I try to start it up for my first time. This is my first outboard motor and am really nervous about messing it up. I understand that I am suppose to use Marine grade 90 weight oil in it as well. I am just wondering if it has to be marine grade or if the regular Pennzoil 90 weight oil will be good enough. Any help in this will be greatly appreciated.

Re: Gearcase maintenance

Don't take out the Phillips head screw!
An AD-11 is a 1957 7.5hp
There are two slot headed screws on the gearcase. One is on the bottom near the skeg and one is further up on the side of the gearcase.
Remove them both and the oil will drain out. The top screw is the vent and the bottom one is the drain. Fill it back up through the bottom hole until it squirts out the top vent hole. Replace the top screw, then the bottom screw. Both should have a nylon gasket on them.
Marine grade 90W supposedly has additives to combat water intrusion that the regular gear oil doesn't have.
Did I mention to not take out the Phillips headed screw? :)
