No special tools needed. All you need is a seal kit and the know how.

Re: gearcase leak

Dan,
I service these little gems and we sometimes find the seals leak at the plugs! These are .75 each and then we pressure test with a hand pump w/gauge to 15 psi the find the source....It can leak in more than one seal! The higher hour motors will leak at either the prop seal(harder) or at the driveshaft seal(means water pump off before getting to the seal)
Switch to a synthetic by Sierra and you can run it still leaking ,though itll need to be swapped every few trips until source is fixed.
You can test for the leak by submerging into water while watching for obvious air bubbles.
Goodluck,
Tim

Re: gearcase leak

Tim
There was water in this the last time I checked it and I figured I would start with new plug washers.the ones I got were blue and for a merc 5 hp but they were real loose around the plug and didn't seem to seat too good.I am going to get new ones and try to rig up a tester.Any tips on making something to test this with?I have a compression tester I was going to try using with a tee but I'm not sure about the connection to the lower unit.
Thanks
Dan

Re: gearcase leak

Dan,
The right washers are brown. They are loose but are flat.
The tester we have is made by Stephens and looks like a bicycle pump.I think a portable air tank w/ gage and then spliced into a lower unit fill hole adaptor like those cheap ones they sell with the one qt lube kits. You may need to buy a barbed adaptor that screws into the fitting if it doesnt match the air hose ID.Go to Schucks or Sears for a cheap air tank w/adjustable valve.
I have one homemade from a freon tank that has a gage but it doesnt have the small increments that you want.0-30 is what you want,in 1 psi increments.
START at 5psi and then go to 15 psi MAX.Soapy water will reveal leaks that arent obvious.Beware when taking apart at pressure....The leftover lube can and will FLY!Burp it slow until the gage hits 3-5 psi.

Goodluck!
Tim
