So I inherited an old Glasstron boat, the motor was shot, so I threw on a 60s mercury 500( I believe but am not sure). The moter was a bit of a challenge, but I got it running like a champ. Problem is, now there is quite a bit of water coming over coming back up and over the back of the boat, enough that by the other end of a tank of gas, the water is up to the floorboards. One of the fines is broken off of the gearcase, would this cause it? Or should I just make something for the water to bounce off? Or is the moter just too big for the boat? Ill post a picture, I didn't paint it but now that it is out of the water I will repaint it soon seeing the patched up job on it.

It sounds like the back of the boat is way over loaded and the motor is the lest of your problems.

Welcome aboard. The little bit of missing anti-ventilation plate won't even cause a ripple. The motor is mounted either too high or too low. The anti-ventilation plate should even to maybe an inch above the bottom of the boat

Potentially could be both I suppose, my first boat so I'm no pro, should I perhaps move the fuel tanks up to the front? They are usually in the back where there is room to move them easily. I will also check the height, it is probaly too low, I put the dang thing on myself and didn't have anything other than my own strength to pull it up so I left it low. The motorvis however the highest the boat is rated for. Trying to get it running right for a nice little fishing boat and something I can easily drop in and out to puts around the many lakes near me, it is pretty light and fast.

You could raise that motor up several inches and be fine.
