Tuned up my 10hp Johnson 1960. Removed the skeg and ut it bak together. I tryed it last night and the gear troubled. First I sat it in reverse, and nothing happened ( I tought it was the shift rod connector. It worked fine in Forward. I pulled it bak to neutral and it didnt shift. I pulled it into reverse again and it shifted into reverse. When I pulled it back to N it stopped. Pulled it into Forward again and nothing happened. What can be the problem?

There's a pivot pin in the skeg portion of the gearcase that the shift rocker arm pivots upon. Is that in place, properly? It should be a screw, Philips head type. That's the only thing I can think of that would allow the motor to alternately shift into reverse one time, and not another... Unless the shift rocker isn't properly seated in the shift cradle (u-shaped piece that rides in the clutch dog).<br />- Scott

There's a bell crank under the powerhead that could be worn. Take the side cover off where the shift link connects. Reach in, and hold the shift rod with a needlenose pliers. Move the shift handle, and see if the rod moves with it.
