Gear shifting trouble

Hello all,

I have a 1994 Johnson 60hp, 3cyl. Last night I had trouble getting it into gear. I had the throttle almost all the way up and it made a nasty grinding noise THEN clunked into gear before I could pull off. After that it ran good for the next few hole shots then gave me a little trouble again later. There seemed to have been a heavy vibration in the motor also.

Any ideas???

Thanks,

Re: Gear shifting trouble

Might check the shift cable adjustment first. If that's OK, then the condition of the gear lube for shavings or other nasty bits.

Thanks FP,

Once I check the shift cable, should I try to lubricate it and what is the best way to do that??

Honestly, control cables are important enough (and cheap enough) to me, that if they are the weak link, I just replace 'em. There are doo-dads to lube the cable, but have you determined that is your problem?
