Gear selection issue after impeller replacement

I have just replaced the impeller in the water pump of my engine, I have put it all back together this afternoon, but before i fired it up, I noticed that the gear selection isn't working. The engine is now always in gear.

I assume this is because when the lower gear section of the engine was put back on, that it no longer lined up correctly (by that I mean that the gear box was out of gear, but the gear selection slide bit in the engine was in the in gear position). Can anybody confirm if this would cause the problem?

If I am correct, what is the best way to ensure that both items end up in the correct position again and line up correctly?

Is it going to be a bit of trial and error to get it right?

The engine is currently sat on a stand in the garden whilst being worked on.

Thanks in advance

Can anybody confirm if my thoughts are right, or should I be doing something else?

Thanks

Alec.

Re: Gear selection issue after impeller replacement

Alec, You are correct the shift shafts are out of synch. Drop the LU, and I will assume you are always in forward.

Move the shift slider to the center of it's travel from the front, and observ the direction the upper shift shaft turns. Now turn the lower shift shaft in that same direction until it clicks into neutral. Now grease the splines and slide the LU up into the midesection, turning the flywheel until it's splines mesh with the driveshaft. Now move the shift slider until the upper and lower shift rods mate. Make sure the slider is fairly well centered in it's travel. Adjust the shift cable to fit w/o moving the slider(control in neutral)

Nice one, thanks Chris. all sounds fairly straight forward, but will take a bit of time. DOH!

I have a feeling that the person who previoulsy had the engine, had it setup incorrectly, as it was always a bit hit and miss about getting into gear, gonna set it up correctly over the weekend and see if it fixes the problems.

Thanks for the reply :)

Alec.
