I have a 76 merc. 233hp. Gear ratio for the outdrive should be at 1.47. I found a great deal on a whole outdrive that has a 1.50 ratio. How much difference is there beween the two performanc wise?

Re: gear ratio

It would work for the most part except you'd need to use a slightly "taller" prop. (higher pitch)

Re: gear ratio

stay as close to the original ratio as possible, although you can reprop to correct, it is not always practical.

Absolutely nothing... The difference is less than 2%. Your prop slip is between 10 and 20%...

Re: gear ratio

What happens if the ratio gets too high, for ex. 1.84 ratio ?

I think everyone missed this from the middle of this thread.

That is a big difference from what you should have. it will NEVER work as well changing props as using the proper gear ratio. If it would, why so you think Merc came out with so many different gear ratio's.
Props are the best between like 17" pitch and 21" above or below that region and you start loosing out of the hole or top end. Think about it.

PS: Almost forgot to mention, the 233's OEM gear ratio was 1.32:1, not 1.50.
