gear question

I have a 65 hp merc outboard. I had the lower off to do a impeller, and im pretty sure somebody messed with the ramp thing that sits on the shift shaft. I have the lower in forward gear ready to go back up but im not sure which way that ramp is suppose to sit while in forward gear. Any suggestions?

This is for a newer 65 you did not say what yours is

Mine is a early 70's 65 but it looks exactly the same. So assuming they are the same, when the lower unit is in neutral the high part of the cam should face forward. Then that means that the high part of the cam would be on the left side in forward gear
