I have read many posts by other people with issues with shifting the OMC Cobra 5.7 into gear. I too have had the fun experience of grinding into reverse and a hard drop into forward gear. I thought I would start by puling the top cover on the Upper Drive before removing the whole outdrive to look at the oil and noticed pitting (not ground) in the gearset and was wondering if this is common for an old unit. I have not yet adjusted the shift linkage, trying to start with the easiest first, look for metal shavings which there did not seem to be any of.
I am pretty sure I will end up doing a full breakdown and rebuilding but if I can get a couple more month out of her until it gets cold then I can rebuild over the winter.
