Remove it again.... There ya go.

Actually, it sounds like you missed the shift shaft or it turned on you and now jammed.

Are you sure it's an Alpha? and not a Gen II or, MC-1, or R or MR?

Re: gear position alpha

It says alpha on it. I did have to purchace an impeller kit for a mr/alpha...I just lowered it and made sure now everything is in forward and can't get it back in the last inch. The shift shoe is not the L looking type it is a spline. What the heck is holding it back from going in that last inch?

Ayuh,... Take it apart again, somethin' slipped outa forward gear while you were puttin' it together,...

It All has to be in Forward gear, durin' assembly,...

I use a bungee on the prop shaft to lock the lower,...

Re: gear position alpha

Is it possible the tube is holding it from full entry and can I turn the prop while give it a push to line up?

Re: gear position alpha

Whatever you do DO NOT FORCE IT ,you`ll be looking for another lower unit

Your best bet would be to pull the complete drive off so you can align all the different things without trying to hold the lower unit up at the same time. Especially if you've never been into a drive like that before.

Re: gear position alpha

Before it started to rain I tried again. I did find that the female spline tube that receives the shoe shift was loose and out of a channel that is attached to the upper outdrive.Should'nt there be a clip to hold that in place?I also noticed that once you get the shoe counterclockwise and the prop engaged you can't move the prop at all or the shift shoe spline moves also. There has to be a trick so what is it?

Re: gear position alpha

control box if fwd, there is no clip for that. the splined shaft is turned full clockwise for fwd. prop is locked turning it CCW.Insert lower unit, raise up,try to catch the foward nut by a few threads. put lower shoe on splined shaft , slight upward pressure on lower unit and turn prop shaft CCW less than an inch. once driveshaft splines are lined up ,unit pops up. make sure both shoes are coupled and tighten the side nuts, front nut, 2 nuts under cavitation plate and allen under the zinc.

Re: gear position alpha

Well that expains it. I watched a youtube video by a chris660 and he turned the shoe that is splined on the lower CCW all the way which is what I did and the prop locks CW.That would expain the shifter not wanting to go into reverse...it's already there.?Thanks Admiral Bt Doctur

Re: gear position alpha

Wish that problem was solved, but not. Cw on the shift shoe...done.
prop ccw til locked....done
slide it all together and wham still won't go up!
Turned the prop slowing ccw and it just won't go.
Even tried pulling the copper tube from the top and install the other way with it stuck in the pump. Not
I am very mechanically inclined and there is only 3 things to line up and I am a dummy

Look up in there, there is an oil seal that has a tendency to come apart (mine did), maybe it is jammed up in there. If you can't get it to go, pull the upper and do it on the bench, much, much easier. Then that will give you a chance to check the gimbal ring, grease the U-joints and check alignment, which should be done annually anyway.

Re: gear position alpha

If you have an O-ring at the top of your vertical shaft, it may be hanging up on that. +1 on doing the reassembly on the bench, then you can actually "see" what is going on through the exhaust port. You may even have a piece (or an entire old O-ring) up in the splines of the upper.

Re: gear position alpha

Problem solved. Needed extra person to help hold lower then move shifter at the helm just a little and walla she slipped in. Now to the head gasket. This 470 has oil in the antifreeze tank and it looks fresh which makes sence because I just changed it.I hope this goes well...any tips on that job like where do I get a mercury gasket (OEM) would be greatly appreciated
