I Have A 1971 50HP Evinrude Engine With The Model Number 5OESL71S That I Just Bought And Was Wondering What Kind Of Gear Oil To Use. When I Bought It It Came With A Bottel Of Genric Gear Oil From Wal-Mart. My Girlfriends Dad Says That That Is The Wrong Stuff And Should Be Changed Out He Said Something About "Type C"? Does Anybody Know What It Is That I Need And Where To Get It?

Drain the lower unit until it stops dripping and then refill until you see oil overflowing through the top hole of the lower unit. Once you finish you can then unscrew the pump or pull out the bottle which ever you are using and then put the screws back in. Happy boating

And don't forget the nylon washers for the screws. You want to keep that lower unit water-tight. At 28 cents each there is no reason not to replace them.

It's less than one quart, but it's kind of hard to squeeze all of it out of one quart bottle, so I'd buy 2 quarts, get it as full as you can with one, then switch to the other bottle and finish when it squirts out of the top hole. Then put the left over in one bottle for the next time.
I buy in in the gallon jug with the pump. More expensive the first time, but then I just buy quarts to keep the gallon jug filled.
