Re: gear oil leak
I have a 1960 Gale 5hp model 5D-17B i ran it the other day in my test tank and noticed gear oil in the water. i removed th fill screw and the oil is a cream color does anyone know.
1.how to pressure test a lower unit?
2.how to remove this lower unit?
3.can i get parts for this motor?
Thank You
0. It probably is not gear oil on the water. It would take a major leak to do that, and you wouldn't have to be pressure testing it to find that big of a leak. It is the oil that you put in the gas. Every drop of that oil passes through the engine. Some of it is burned (smoke), but most of it goes out the under water exhaust---right into your test tank. That's just the way it is.
1. Remove the lower unit, and water pump, drain the oil out and pressurize with 3 or 4 pounds of air, max. Observe air leaks.
2. Remove the powerhead, disconnect the shift rod, unbolt and remove the lower unit.
3. Absolutely. The lower unit parts are the same as Evinrudes and Johnsons. Most but not all of the upper parts are also.
