Gear oil around prop?

I have recently purchased a 1998 Proline w/ a 200 Mercury o/b. My mechanic conducted a complete engine check and winterized it for me. I just noticed today that a small amount of oil is leaking from around the bottom of the prop and down the skeg the motor is in the fully down position. It is a brownish/clear oil and I was wonder what the source of this problem could be. (The mechanic pressure tested and replaced the lower unit oil if this is any help) I am concerned about possible water leaking into the lower unit and cracking it, if that is where it is coming from.

If the engine was fogged, this is most likely where the oil is comming from.

Compare the oil to a sample of gear oil within the gearcase.

If you have fresh oil in the gearcase already, and will not be taking it into the water, you will not have to worry about the gearcase freezing up.

TMD
