Gear Grind Question

I just read a post on grinding gears & thought, mine do that all the time. My issue is when ever I go from neutral to fwd. it will grind- slightly. & also when going from neutral th rev it will grind-again, slightly. Not like either is doing any type of damage but it is still a grind. Just reading that other thread prompted me to post. the engine is a 1985 Force 85 HP o/b. I have noticed that the prop is still turning -slightly- when in neutral, is this a problem starting? Is something wearing out?

Re: Gear Grind Question

Everything is normal. When putting it in gear do not ease it in, put it in gear with a slight snap or a little forceful. The gears are not syncronized like in an auto transmission.

Re: Gear Grind Question

Sounds to me like your engine may be idling high and therefore when you go into gear it grinds. Get your manual out and see what the correct idle rpm is for your outboard. Just my 2 cents...:)

Re: Gear Grind Question

It is normal...get a feel of where it kicks into gear and note the position of the handle. From now on move it into gear quicker so you wont be grinding as much. You can even mark it with a sharpie.
