While engine is running when you engage the gear, how much clunking noise one supposed to hear? I am new to boats and I know they definetely do not shift like a standard transmission automobile. When I engage forward or reverse I hear the gear housing going clunk, sitting inside the boat I do not feel any jump or hit or kick but the noise. So how much is normal? Once, I took a sea ray for a test drive with inboard engine and that one clunked hard and it was felt thru the hull. My maxum with force 120 doesnt give me the kick in the hull but noise is definately heard easily. Any ideas or opinions? how does yours engage?

Some clunking is normal. Remember not to ease it into gear. Put it in with just a little force as the gears are not sybcronized like in a car's transmission.

You are right, I make sure it goes in at once. I dont treat it like a standard transmission clutch. It doesnt grind or anything and I dont think there is any binding at all. It slightly drops the rpm but it wont kill the engine so I know its normal.

Shifting should be done in a smooth fast motion.Putting it in slowly will grind the gears.
The clunk could be(searay)from the motors idle set too high.
I hardly ever hear the clunk on my Forces. It's covered in grease and packed in pretty tight. It shouldn't make any noise.J
