Gear case shift rod screw 1994 Johnson 40

The manual says remove screw securing shift rod to shift rod connector. I don't see any way to access the screw without removing the VRO assembly. Am I missing something. For some reason the manual doesn't mention this part at all. Just hoping there is some easier way.

I am trying to rebuild the water pump so I need to drop the gear case assembly.

I think you have to remove the water intake screen and in there you'll see the shift rod connecter,It may be a little cotter pin to remove the connecting pin.

Finally took the port side lower cowling off and it made it easy. Also will allow me to clean things up while I'm in there. Maybe a slow way but effective at least.
