Hi guys I'm back,
After an ignition rebuild and motor running great, I had the boat out twice no problems but when I looked at the lower unit two days later I saw what looked like black oil coming from the case above the pump and around the shaft of the prop. I planed to replace the seals on the gear case and having only a motor parts catalog and a LeeRoy Wisner Maintaining Johnson QD Informational. I did start to disassemble the lower unit from the pump down, I drained the gear case oil and it had a golden dark appearance to it not milky at all so I think thats good. I removed the cover for the shift rod and loosened the screw that holds it, took out the four 7/15 bolts from the housing under the pump assembly and pulled it down. All went well but what I thought was black oil was all over the top of the pump cover. I looked closer and thought this doesn't look right it felt a bit different from oil so I washed it off with the hose and it's gone. Was it silt from the river bottom and how would it get there or do I have a problem from above the gear case? I'm just getting into this and I want to fix or avoid problems and maintain the motor properly.

Thanks Wayne

Hold on there Wayne. Consider this: Every drop of oil that you put in the gas goes through the engine. Some of it burns (smoke), and the rest goes out the exhaust, where it picks up black carbon particles and is expelled with the exhaust, mostly underwater. Those parts and drain holes are in the exhaust housing. What you are looking at is normal and doesn't need fixing.

100_6274.jpg100_6275.jpgOkay, but it is a little late. Given the age of the motor and not knowing what was done past till present, I wanted to be sure that the lower end was in good condition. I now know how the upper is and was ready to take it to the next step. So now I have it split right to the water pump cover with the drive shaft out. Just to put it back together from here is going to at least be a couple of gaskets and the pin that drives the pump fell to god knows where but I have ordered that, I didn't plan to take the shaft out but when I turned it over to get to the gear case cover the shaft fell out, I still have the key in the lower of the shaft for the pinion, I see a problem trying to slide the shaft back in the pinion gear. The screws that hold that assembly where to tight to get loose and maybe that was a good thing. The pump looks fine. Just a small headache putting it back together.

Thanks
