When draning gear lube for winter,1979 25 Hp Evinrude electric start, much water not much lubricant. During summer I noticed lube coming from weep hole near oil level plug, I am assuming bad seal in top of gear case around drive shaft, any thoughts on this, how difficult is repair? Any special tools required? I have replaced gears in gear case, but never got into any further teardown. I am sure water not coming in around gear case seal. Any help would be appreciated any place on web that might walk you thru repair, maybe with pictures. Thanks swede

Re: gear box lube

If you have the drive off, pump air to around 10 psi into the drive through the oil fill hole. If the leaks are not obvious, submerge the drive and look for the air bubbles. Don't over-pressurize or you may blow out good seals. I usually like a drive to hold pressure for around 15 minutes
or better.

There are gearcase seal kits that have everything that you need and your model-specific service manual will guide you.

If the leak is from the shift shaft seals, you can fix it pretty easily - same for the round seals on the fill plugs. That leaves the driveshaft seal and the prop shaft seal which are a little more difficult.

Good luck
