Gateway not storing fuel used

Hello, I decided to add an nmea 2000 gateway to my motor (115 optimax). The lowrance now displays fuel flow rate, and all kinds of other engine stuff, but the fuel remaining always shows 0. I tried hitting refuel to no avail, fuel remaining is still stuck at 0. There is a data field for fuel remaining coming from the gateway module, but it always returns 0. Do I have things configured wrong or do I need to buy an FDM?

No idea what a FDM is, but you need to input how much fuel is in the tank as part of setup.

Unless you have a tank level input, the motor has no clue as to how much fuel in the tank. You need to enter the amount of fuel you put in the tank each and every time you put fuel in the tank

fuel data manager. formerly known as the ep-85. Yes, I tried entering 100 liters for example, and the fuel remaining shows 0 still. To be clear, I want an electronic module to calculate the amount of fuel used based on the fuel flow data from the ecm, which in turn is based on the amount of fuel fired through the injectors. What I want to know is if the smartcraft gateway can do this, or if I need the FDM.

The smart craft gateway gives you flow data from the ECM. It does not make, store, calculate or display usage data.

On my Garmin system, I plug the NMEA module with flow and fuel level inputs into the NMEA network and the chart plotter does all the work.

What chartplotter are you running?
Most are plug and play with a Gateway anymore

Hi. The vessel view system can certainly hold and retain a previous value of fuel remaining from the last outing. With reference to the self entered input way of doing things. Not sure or familiar with your system though. Alternatively the other boat I have with full smart craft gauges, uses an actual compatible sender unit from the tank for value. Do you have her calibrated in the settings menu to be able to function properly to the way you’re using it ? Just the one tank selected and the tank capacity figure imputed and stored ?

Sorry, forgot to mention my unit is a lowrance HDS 12. no smartcraft gauges. All I have is the hds, the gateway, and the motorguide on the network. I tried all kinds of settings, and loaded the newest update, but the fuel level still shows 0. I selected the center tank source as the mercury gateway, and set the capacity to 80L. I then went to the refuel menu, and inputted that I added 20L. Fuel level still shows 0.

Lowrance hds. The garmin has a built in integrator, so an FDM is not needed with that.

Built in Integrator = display software

Must be a very old HDS unit.
Cant be updated with new display software?

Forgot, Lowrance. Everything has a cute trademarked name and is optional.....lol

Ok. So this may not be the issue (again not familiar with anything other than the smart craft system), but you absolutely need to make sure that you have selected the correct tank. On the mercury system, there are options for the main fuel tank (fuel tank 1) and additionally, fuel tank 2/other. The latter of which, is for a secondary fuel tank (that will not work, if you have that selected and don’t have the networking anyway) or in your case, the 2 stroke oil tank. Make sure you have the right thing selected as the fuel tank. Sometimes the fuel 2 other is even plugged into a water separating filter or branches off it at least. Make sure you even have the network for it too. It’s clearly labelled when you do.
But perhaps more relevant to you..if you don’t have or aren’t even using the network or sender sensors for a fuel tank (this might be the case from what you’ve said and you just want a manual entry from you and a count down)…you need to select and inform the system that you are wanting this function instead.
