Hello,
I am rebuilding my lower unit on a 1966 johnson 60hp and when I disconnected the top flange from the stem it had/has a gasket on it. Where the lower flange connects to the gearcase, there is no gasket. Should I get this gasket replaced?? Does it come with a lower unit kit??

Thank you
Mike and son Zach
We're digging it and having fun !!!!!!!!

There is normally no gasket where the lower unit connects to the leg.

There was no gasket on my engine , but acording my parts catalog ,there shuld be .

Replace or not ?? can´t see the need of a gasket , but I did replace it on my engine ( see sign )

Parts #305312 , if replacing ( for a 90hp 1964 ,I do belive it´s the same gasket on your 60hp ( see pic. at sign))

Re: gasket where leg meets top flange???

Thanks for input,
To answer Petrolhead, there is not gasket on the lower flange that connects to the gearcase. There is a gasket that connects the upper flange to the stem. Looking for bottom to top, I have a gearcase then a stem extension (my guess is this is why they call it a long shaft)then the stem. The gasket is located between the stem and the upper flange of the stem extension. I hope this explains better. I also understand why you would say that there is not need for a gasket! It's rather confusing at this point.
thank you
Mike and son Zach

Acording the parts list ( still 90hp 1964 )
1 gasket under and 1 gasket above the extension .

Droll,
This is a great image of low end unit. Thank you and I have to complment you on your work in progress with your engine. A labor of love I'm sure. May I ask where you get a tilt unit for our year motors??? Is it a lot of garage sale looking or is there a better means to an end??

Thanks all for the input.
Now for my next trick, I have to extract and extractor for a bolt I was trying to get out last nite. It's a 1/4-20 bolt that holds part #21 on the diagram above into place.

Still digging it and having fun!

Mike and son Zach

Found it on EBay , a good place for parts for those old engines :) ( part# and manual are required )

I have to extract and extractor for a bolt
Do it right the first time ,or goodbye to the fun ;) .
Can you get a grip on the bolt ??
If so you might try heating around the bolt (propane torch with a blow torch tip )( drain the LU first + remove the bearing )

If no luck then weld a nut onto the top of the broken bolt ( best way )

Still no luck , drill out the broken bolt > clean out the remains with an tap ( 1/4 tap ).

damaged treads > insert a heli-coil.

EZ-outs = NO NO NO .
one more time
STAY AWAY FROM EZ-OUTS

Re: gasket where leg meets top flange???

Droll,

No way is this going to stop me from having fun. :) My son was upset and I had to explain to him, it's a learning experience. Do it twice and we're both stupid. SSOOOOOO
to answer your questions, can't grip it, the extractor is lodged into the center of the bolt below the surface. I do have access to a vertical milling machine which I feel very comfortable operating. What I don't know is if I tried milling into the center of the bolt and hit the extractor, what will happen to the cutter?? I don't have welding capabilities so N/G on that.
Thanks once again for your input
Mike and son Zach

Re: gasket where leg meets top flange???

Just a follow up, last night I was able to drill a hole to accept a heli coil. So I'll say as many have said here at iboats, don't use easy outs.

Thanks to all for your help and now on to the task of put this puppy together.

So , you had to try :) .

Those thing might be usable one a fresh water engine , in a non heated aria , best to stay away .

But you did mange to separate part 21 ?,next funny part is to separate the lower part of the unit.
Do it on a clean working space ,some needle bearing rollers will fall out ( 20 rollers )

Last funny part is to remove the 3" internal snap-ring ( get the correct tool )

The rest of the job ...... no problem ,take it easy , no rush  .

Re: gasket where leg meets top flange???

Droll,
Part #21 is where I discovered the broken 1/4-20 bolt head broken! Yes I have removed that part and also the lower unit with the needle bearings. I was told to use Vaseline to set them when I reassemble the LU. We're on our way. It's raining up here in Saratoga, NY so into the garage we go and maybe tonight or tomorrow I will give the lower unit another compression test before I attach it to the stem.
Thanks again :)
Still digging it
Mike and son Zach

Re: gasket where leg meets top flange???

SoLittle,
Just want to say thanks for the heads up. I tried to use a little as possible and it was only used to place the needle bearings nothing else. The lower unit went together w/o a problem. My son and I took a pressure test and we had reached 12 PSI and used soapy water just to make sure all was secure. May I say we congratulated each other after that test. All is well, full steam ahead and Still digging it.
Mike and son Zach

Re: gasket where leg meets top flange???

Follow up to My broken extractor and bolt removing experience. I called a local machine shop and a friend of mine there told me that there is a procedure they use, using an EDM machine. Electric Discharge Machine. It was explained to me that they take the piece of metal and submerge it into a tub of oil, then place an electrode to the broken bolt and it comes right out. He has seen it done over and over again. You will have to ask around at your local machine shops to find someone who does this but I bet it will be worth it. Lots of luck to all and never use easy outs on outboards, and that's my final answer! :)
