Gasket maker or gasket?

Has anyone ever used gasket maker instead of a gasket. I have an Evinrude 1963 18 hp Fastwin. The exhaust cover gasket has gone bad due to my error and I’m having a problem locating the two gaskets I need for a reasonable price. The gaskets I did get were made of a paper fiber type material and when removed fell apart. Any advice will be appreciated.

I have done it on newer model motors without any ill effects

For that application get a sheet of gasket material and cut your own. Buy a cheap hole punch or grommet hole punch (at fabric stores) to do the bolt holes and use sissors or exacto knife to do the rest. Bigger motors are harder to do but an 18 twin is easy.
