Alpha One Gen One. Engine is the mercrusier 165.

I removed my upper drive, and am ready to install.

Went to marina and bought the gasket housing kit for the bell housing to upper unit assembly.

It came with:
Gasket
Large O-Ring (For water area)
Large Seal
2 Smaller O-rings

What are the 2 smaller o-rings for? At first I thought they were for the 2 o-rings that are on the drive shaft. But the drive shaft looks much larger in diameter than these two o-rings.

Is that in deed what they are for and I just need to stretch them out to go down the shaft?

Or are the 2 o-rings in these gasket kits for something else?

For an example of the gastket kit, here is the one that the marina gave me using the link from another site:

ALSO, my old gasket was a rubber gasket. The new one I am about to replace it with is a cardboardish / paper like gasket. Do I need to use a gasket seal like permatex on the front and backside of this gasket before installing? Or is the paper gasket just placed on with nothing? I am just concerned with going from rubber to paper that its not as good so not sure if supposed to take extra protection or not?

there was never a rubber gasket used on the GEN II`s. If anything use plain grease to hold it. The 2 smaller O rings are just forced over the shaft untill they hit the 2 grooves. For the large rubber ring, that should be glued in place.(bellows adhes, contact cement, 3M weather stripping adhes.)
