I was given a boat that has an 85HP johnson on it. I got it because the boat cover tore and the boat filled with water in a storm and went uder the water. Now the motor however did stay above the water. the guy got it out of the water after a few weeks, and put it in a heated shed where it has sat for about two years. We cleaned up the carbs, checked a few things, and got a carry on gas tank. The mortor started right up . The boat gas tank is under the floor of the boat, and I can't pull it out. How can I clean it out and make sure nothing is in it? The tank is made out of Aluminum.

Thanks
Paul

Paul - You should have an access plate on the floor directly over the sending unit on the tank for the fuel guage. Open it and remove the sending unit. It is attached with 5 screws (some use allen screws). You then have access to the interior of the tank. Raise the front of the boat so that the fuel will go to the back of the tank. Siphon out all fuel. You can tie a weight to the end of the siphon hose to make sure you get as much as possible. Reinstall the sending unit using some permatex or use a new gasket.

I would then put a can of dry gas in the tank followed by 6 gal or so of fuel mix. Get the rmaining old fuel out of all lines & fuel pump. Install a water seperator in the fuel line to trap any that you couldn't get.

That should do it.
