Gas tank replacement gasket and float

I've got an old metal 6 gallon Johnson tank that needs a new gasket around the pickup area, and a new float for the gauge.

Can I just make a new float out of cork? What is it coated in? Is there a gasket readily available, or is it easier just to cut one out of gasket stock?

thanks

Hi Mark

If it were me, I would just use cork and shelac it. And I would get some gasket stock and cut it to fit.....Most of the floats are plastic now, but the cork will work fine if sealed so it does not absorb the gas...

Dry the cork out for a few days before you varnish it. Also, the gas will deteriorate the varnish after a while. I understand that some hobby shops might sell a fuel resistant type of varnish.

I can't help with the gasket. I haven't had to reseal my tanks, yet.

How much do you plan to spend on a can of shellac which will dissolve in alcohol-containing gas or fuel-proof dope from the hobby shop? Add a roll of cork gasket material. Does that make sense? A new float is about three bucks from a dealer. Gasket? Another buck or so. As an added bonus, you would get a fuel proof float in the bargain. You can buy it on-line if the dealer is too far to drive. I don't know which tank you have but float # 302559 is used in an awful lot of them.

Or update the old metal tank with a new plastic one which will come with a new gauge and gasket, of course..Pretty cheap at Walmart as I remember...

Thanks F_R. I didn't think the parts would be available for a 20 year old tank, but after poking around the web for a while, I found em.

Thanks again.
