I recently purchased a 25' power boat with duel tanks. One of the tanks has been sitting for the past few months with no cover on it. I was wondering what my best option would be to get the tank cleaned out and back in service?

Built-in or transportable tank?

New transportable tanks are quite inexpensive so a couple of cleaning fluids + the job may turn out to be a bad idea, alone for the bux involved.

t-56 - How old is the fuel and do you have any idea of of tank capacity and how much fuel is in the tank?

I would try to siphon out a few gal getting the hose as close to the bottom of the tank as you can and put a few samples in glass jars as you go. This is to try to get an idea of how much water is present. If a lot keep draining. You should also replace the water seperators for each tank and carry extra filters and keep checking them until you are sure that any water is gone.

There are a number of fuel additives you can use also. StaBil seems to be the favorite. You can also clean the fuel itself. That process is called polishing. What you do is hook up an electric fuel pump with attached filter and pump the fuel from the tank through the filter and back into the tank (again check the filter once in a while).

Cleaning the tank itself is a bitsh and I would not mess with it unless it was leaking - - and then I would replace it rather than trying to clean & fix.

Re: gas tank cleaning

Cool thank you for the help. I will siphon out whatever is in there. I believe the tank is just about empty, but the gauge could be registering wrong. I will also try some of the sta-bil, or mabee some gas dryers will work. Again thanks for the help.
